Abstract

Diabetic ulcer is one of the most common chronic complications of diabetes mellitus and is associated with a high risk of infection, delayed wound healing, prolonged hospitalization, and increased morbidity. Effective wound management is essential to prevent further complications and improve patient outcomes. Honey has been widely recognized as a complementary wound care therapy because of its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-regenerating properties. This study aimed to describe the application of honey in diabetic ulcer patients with the nursing problem of risk for infection at Gunung Jati Regional Hospital, Cirebon City. A descriptive case study design with an Evidence-Based Nursing (EBN) approach was employed. Data were collected through interviews, direct observation, physical examination, medical record review, and wound assessment during the implementation of honey therapy. The intervention involved the application of honey as a complementary treatment during wound care procedures. The findings demonstrated improvements in wound condition, including reduced exudate, decreased signs of infection risk, and enhanced granulation tissue formation. These changes indicated a more favorable wound-healing process during the observation period. The study suggests that honey can be used as a complementary nursing intervention to support wound healing and reduce the risk of infection in patients with diabetic ulcers. Incorporating honey into wound care practice may provide a simple, safe, and cost-effective approach to improving patient outcomes.
