Abstract

Environmental health is essential for maintaining public health, yet household waste management remains a major challenge in Indonesia due to the high volume of organic waste that attracts disease vectors such as rats, flies, and cockroaches. These vectors increase the risk of food contamination, particularly in densely populated settlements with limited sanitation facilities. This study aimed to analyze the effect of household waste management on the risk of food contamination in Sungai Pauh Induk Village, West Langsa District. An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted. The results showed that household waste management, disease vectors, and food hygiene significantly affected the risk of food contamination (p < 0.05). Household waste management was identified as the strongest predictor, with an Odds Ratio (OR) of 4.14 (95% CI: 1.89–9.08). These findings highlight the importance of improving household waste management to reduce food contamination risks. Recommended interventions include providing covered waste bins, increasing waste collection frequency, promoting waste segregation, strengthening vector control, and improving food hygiene education through community health programs.
