Abstract

Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause various skin disorders; therefore, sunscreen products are needed to protect the skin from the harmful effects of UV rays. Pandan leaf (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.) contains secondary metabolites with potential antioxidant and photoprotective properties. This study aimed to determine whether pandan leaf extract could be formulated into an emulgel dosage form, identify the most optimal formulation based on its physical characteristics, and determine its Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value. The study was conducted by formulating pandan leaf extract into three emulgel formulations with different extract concentrations. Physical evaluations included organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, and emulsion type tests. A hedonic test was also performed to assess panelists’ acceptance, while SPF values were determined in vitro using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at wavelengths of 290–320 nm. The results showed that all formulations met the requirements for good physical characteristics. All formulations exhibited a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion type. Hedonic testing indicated that Formula F1 was the most preferred formulation based on color, aroma, and appearance. The SPF values of Formula F1, F2, and F3 were 2.65 ± 0.099, 3.16 ± 0.040, and 5.13 ± 0.442, respectively. Formula F3 showed the highest SPF value and was categorized as providing moderate protection. In conclusion, pandan leaf extract can be successfully formulated into an emulgel with acceptable physical characteristics. Formula F1 was identified as the most optimal formulation based on physical evaluation and hedonic testing, whereas Formula F3 demonstrated the highest sunscreen activity.
