Abstract

Background: Chronic hypertrophic tonsillitis is a common otorhinolaryngology condition that may cause recurrent episodes of inflammation, tonsillar enlargement, and indications for tonsillectomy. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between recurrence frequency and the degree of chronic hypertrophic tonsillitis with indications for tonsillectomy at the ENT-HN Polyclinic of Hj. Bunda Halimah Hospital, Batam City, from January 2021 to December 2024. Methods: This observational analytic study used a cross-sectional design with secondary data obtained from medical records. A total of 123 patients were included using total sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Likelihood Ratio test. Results: Most respondents had moderate recurrence frequency (41.5%), grade 3 tonsillar hypertrophy (48.8%), and indications for tonsillectomy (92.7%). Bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between tonsillitis recurrence frequency and indications for tonsillectomy (p=0.016), as well as between the degree of chronic hypertrophic tonsillitis and indications for tonsillectomy (p=0.000). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between recurrence frequency and tonsillar hypertrophy degree with indications for tonsillectomy. The higher the recurrence frequency and tonsillar grade, the greater the likelihood of tonsillectomy indication.
