Abstract

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory disorder characterized by progressive airflow limitation and is often accompanied by increased sputum production and dyspnea. Ventilatory impairment in COPD may lead to decreased respiratory function and limitations in daily activities. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of diaphragmatic breathing, pursed lip breathing, and effective coughing on respiratory function in patients with COPD. The research method used was a case study of a 74-year-old male patient who complained of dyspnea during activity, productive cough, and fatigue. Physiotherapy interventions focused on diaphragmatic breathing, pursed lip breathing, and effective coughing exercises to improve ventilatory efficiency and facilitate airway secretion clearance. Evaluations were conducted using respiration rate, Modified Borg Scale, thoracic expansion, and the 2 Minutes Walking Test. After the intervention, there was a decrease in respiration rate from 22 to 20 breaths/minute, a reduction in dyspnea scale during activity from 6/10 to 5/10, improvement in thoracic expansion, and an increase in 2 Minutes Walking Test distance from 48.9 meters to 59.9 meters. These results indicate that diaphragmatic breathing, pursed lip breathing, and effective coughing may help improve respiratory function in patients with COPD.
