Infections caused by pathogenic bacteria remain a significant public health concern and may lead to various diseases, including diarrhea. Several bacterial species commonly associated with diarrheal diseases are Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and Shigella flexneri. The excessive and continuous use of antibiotics has contributed to the emergence of bacterial resistance, highlighting the need to discover new antimicrobial sources. Actinomycetes are microorganisms known for their ability to produce a wide range of secondary metabolites with antibacterial properties. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of secondary metabolites produced by actinomycetes isolated from soil samples collected from the Arboretum of the University of Riau against pathogenic bacteria that cause diarrhea. The actinomycete isolates used in this study were B1.06, B3.13, C2.18, A2.01, and C2.20. Secondary metabolites were extracted using ethyl acetate as the solvent and tested for antibacterial activity using the disc diffusion method. Antibacterial activity was assessed based on the diameter of the inhibition zones formed around the discs. The results demonstrated that all actinomycete isolates were capable of inhibiting the growth of diarrhea-causing pathogenic bacteria, although with varying levels of effectiveness. The inhibition zone diameters were compared with tetracycline susceptibility criteria to determine bacterial sensitivity levels. The antibacterial activity of the actinomycete secondary metabolites was categorized as resistant, intermediate, or sensitive against the tested bacteria.
