Abstract

Abstract. The transition to parenthood requires complex physical, psychological, and social adjustments for couples with a newborn baby. Husbands’ support in neonatal care plays a crucial role in breastfeeding success, maternal postpartum mental health, and parenting quality; however, in-depth studies in rural communities of West Sulawesi remain limited. This study aimed to explore the forms of husbands’ support in newborn care during the transition to parenthood in Parappe Village, Campalagian District, Polewali Mandar Regency. A qualitative study with a descriptive phenomenological design was employed. Eight participants, consisting of four married couples with infants aged 0–3 months, were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and field notes from January to May 2026. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, supported by source triangulation, member checking, and peer debriefing to ensure credibility. The findings identified five major themes: physical support, emotional and psychological support, informational support, structural barriers, and the role of culture and gender expectations. All female participants emphasized that their husbands’ support, even in simple forms, had a significant impact on their self-confidence, psychological well-being, and breastfeeding success. In conclusion, husbands’ support is multidimensional and contextual, while workload and patriarchal gender norms remain major challenges. Therefore, maternal and child health programs should integrate education on fathers’ active involvement starting from the antenatal period.
