Abstract

Mental retardation remains a significant problem for children due to its high prevalence. Mental retardation causes limitations in intellectual function and adaptive behavior, resulting in poor daily living skills (ADL) in children. This study aims to analyze the results of implementing multiple life skills training based on real-life activities on the ADL abilities of children with mental retardation. This descriptive study involved 24 children with mild to moderate mental retardation at a Special Needs School in Batam City. The intervention included training in shopping, simple cooking, serving food, and cleaning the dining area using an experiential learning approach. The results showed an average ADL skill score of 15.29. 20.8% of children were able to complete all skills. Children appeared more enthusiastic and active during hands-on learning. Real-life skills training based on real-life activities has the potential to increase the independence of children with mental retardation and can be implemented as a practical and economical learning method in schools
