Abstract

Family planning counseling is an important strategy to increase contraceptive use and reduce unintended pregnancies. Globally, approximately 65% of married women use modern contraceptive methods; however, in Indonesia, the contraceptive prevalence rate remains at 57.2%, with an unmet need rate of 23%. In East Java, the use of modern contraception has reached 62.4%, but participation among postpartum mothers remains low, and discontinuation rates are relatively high. These conditions highlight the need for innovative counseling methods, one of which is the use of a decision-support tool known as the KLOP wheel. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of counseling based on the KLOP wheel decision aid in contraceptive method selection among postpartum mothers at TPMB Bdn. Afita Delianah, Malang Regency. This study employed a quasi-experimental design using a posttest-only control group approach. A total of 32 respondents were divided into intervention and control groups. Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney test. The results showed a significant difference between the two groups, with a p-value of 0.009 (p < 0.05), indicating that counseling using the KLOP wheel was more effective in assisting postpartum mothers in selecting appropriate contraceptive methods compared to conventional counseling. The use of this tool improved understanding, increased active participation, and supported informed decision-making. In conclusion, KLOP wheel-based counseling is effective in improving contraceptive method selection among postpartum mothers. It is recommended that postpartum mothers actively participate in family planning counseling and utilize the information provided by healthcare professionals to choose contraceptive methods that are appropriate for their reproductive needs and conditions.
