Abstract

. Tuberculosis is an infectious disease and the leading cause of death from the single infectious agent Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) bacteria. This bacterium is an intracellular bacterium that lives inside cells. CD8+ T lymphocytes have a defense function and help regulate the body's immune response mechanism against intracellular bacteria. Decreased CD8+ T lymphocyte cell function can interfere with the process of Mtb bacterial elimination. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the number of CD8+ T lymphocytes and the degree of sputum AFB positivity in patients with pulmonary TB at Sikumana Community Health Center, Kupang City. This type of research is analytic observational with cross sectional study method. Respondents in this study were 10 respondents. Data were collected by examining the number of CD8+ T lymphocytes in whole blood samples using the flow cytometry method and examining AFB from the sputum of TB patients microscopically. Data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. The statistical test results showed that there was a significant strong negative relationship between the number of CD8+ T lymphocytes and the degree of sputum AFB positivity in patients with pulmonary TB at Sikumana Community Health Center in Kupang City (p=0.024; r=-0.700). This indicates that the higher the number of CD8+ T lymphocytes, the lower the degree of AFB sputum positivity.
