Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between parasocial interaction and anxiety among university students in Semarang City. Parasocial interaction is defined as a one-sided emotional attachment formed by individuals toward media figures, which may influence psychological well-being. This research employed a quantitative explanatory approach involving 205 students aged 19–24 years selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using an online questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality tests, linearity tests, and Pearson correlation analysis with SPSS software. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between parasocial interaction and anxiety (r = 0.721, p < 0.05), indicating that higher parasocial involvement is associated with higher levels of anxiety. Most respondents were categorized as having moderate levels of both parasocial interaction and anxiety. These findings suggest that excessive emotional attachment to media figures may reduce direct social interaction and increase psychological vulnerability. This study highlights the importance of media literacy and self-concept development to help students regulate parasocial engagement and maintain emotional well-being.
