Abstract

Insomnia is a sleep disorder with a high global prevalence, including in Indonesia, which can disturb both the physical and emotional functions of adults. This study aims to analyze and determine the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy in improving sleep quality in adults with insomnia through a meta-analysis method. Article selection was conducted using the PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) model on randomized controlled trial (RCT) articles published between 2016 and 2026 across the Google Scholar, Science Direct, and PubMed databases. Data were extracted using the PRISMA flowchart and statistically analyzed using RevMan 5.4 software. Out of a total of 674 identified articles, 11 RCT articles with a total sample of 992 participants spread across Asia, Europe, and America met the inclusion criteria. Due to the very high level of inter-study heterogeneity I2= 95%), the effect estimate was calculated using a random-effects model approach. The meta-analysis results showed that acupuncture intervention significantly improved sleep quality by 3.37 compared to the non-acupuncture group receiving a placebo, sham acupuncture, or cognitive behavioral therapy (MD = 3,37; CI 95% = 1,66–5,08; p < 0.0001). Although the funnel plot evaluation displayed asymmetry indicating publication bias, the critical appraisal showed that the majority of primary studies possessed good methodology. In conclusion, acupuncture therapy is scientifically proven to be effective in improving the sleep quality of adult insomnia patients and can be recommended as a safe, evidence-based complementary non-pharmacological intervention option.
