Abstract

Postoperative pain following a cesarean section is a common problem experienced by patients and can hinder mobilization, breastfeeding, infant care activities, and postoperative recovery. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of non-pharmacological pain management in patients following a cesarean section. The study employed a systematic literature review method based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The literature search was conducted using the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Library databases. The included articles were quantitative studies in English published between 2016 and 2026, and article quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute’s (JBI) Critical Appraisal Tools. A total of 10 articles involving 1,081 patients met the inclusion criteria. The synthesis identified six groups of non-pharmacological interventions, namely aromatherapy, auricular therapy, physical therapy and rehabilitation, music therapy, massage therapy, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). All interventions were found to be effective in reducing postoperative pain intensity and also provided additional benefits, including increased comfort, relaxation, and mobility, as well as reduced anxiety and a decreased need for postoperative analgesics. In conclusion, non-pharmacological pain management is effective as a therapeutic approach for patients following a cesarean section because it reduces pain intensity and provides additional benefits that support the patient’s holistic recovery.
