Abstract

Superficial skin fungal infection is one of the complications frequently experienced by patients with diabetes mellitus. These infections tend to be more extensive and difficult to treat because of the weakened immune system commonly found in patients with diabetes. Poor blood glucose control further aggravates fungal skin infections and may lead to a poorer prognosis. This study aimed to determine the correlation between blood glucose levels and the incidence of superficial skin fungal infections in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Haji Hospital Medan. The study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling method was total sampling of subjects who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were obtained from secondary sources, namely medical records of patients diagnosed with superficial skin fungal infections by physicians, along with records of type 2 diabetes mellitus history and blood glucose levels.Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. The results showed a significant association between blood glucose levels and the incidence of superficial skin fungal infections in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). A total of 32 patients (94.1%) with type 2 diabetes mellitus had uncontrolled blood glucose levels and were associated with superficial skin fungal infections. In conclusion, there is a significant association between blood glucose levels and superficial skin fungal infections in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Haji Hospital Medan.
