Abstract

Oral health is a condition free from pain or disease that interferes with the normal function of teeth and mouth. Dental caries is one of the most common health problems, especially in children, with Lactobacillus acidophilus being one of the main causative bacteria. Toothpaste plays an important role in reducing plaque formation, strengthening teeth against caries, and maintaining gingival health. Purebred chicken egg shells (Gallus sp) as household waste have a high content of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), so they have the potential to be used as raw materials for making toothpaste. This study aims to determine the inhibition of calcium carbonate extract from eggshells with concentrations of 12.5%, 15%, 17.5%, and 20% against the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus. The research used a true experimental design with 24 samples, and data analysis was carried out using the ANOVA test. The results showed a significant difference between treatment concentrations, with a concentration of 20% providing the most effective inhibition against bacterial growth. The conclusion of this study confirms that calcium carbonate extract from purebred chicken eggshell waste has the potential to be an alternative ingredient in toothpaste formulation, as well as providing a solution for the use of household waste to support dental and oral health.
